With his one-act monodrama Erwartung for soprano and orchestra, Arnold Schoenberg attempted to make the visions of his Expressionist visual art world audible. Schoenberg said, “The aim is to represent in slow motion everything that occurs during a single second of maximum spiritual excitement, stretching it out to half an hour.”
